Sydney vs. Melbourne: Where Should You Start?

Sydney and Melbourne are two of Australia’s most famous (and most loved) cities, but they couldn’t be more different. While Sydney is known for its iconic landmarks and sun soaked beaches, Melbourne is famous for being cultural hub and home to an array of boutique shops and vintage markets.

So if you’re limited on time, which one is right for you to visit? Let’s dive into the pros of each city to help you decide…

CHOOSE SYDNEY IF…

  1. You love iconic landmarks
Sydney is home to some of the most recognisable landmarks in the world. If you can’t fully complete your Australia bucket list without walking across the Sydney Harbour Bridge or grabbing a photo of the infamous Opera House, then Sydney is the one for you.
  2. You’re a beach baby
While Bondi is definitely the most famous beach in the area, Sydney also boats a number of other gorgeous beach spots, like Coogee, Manly and Palm Beach. Whether you’re into surfing, swimming or just sunbathing on the golden sands, Sydney will have you covered on the beaches front.
  3. You’re outdoorsy
From the gorgeous Botanical Gardens (with views of the Opera House) to the stunning Blue Mountains just a short drive away, Sydney is a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Even just the coastal walks (like the beautiful Bondi to Coogee trail) will have you in awe.
  4. You love the sun
On average, Sydney gets an impressive 200 sunny days per year (for research purposes, we Googled how many sunny days London gets to compare and all the stats were done in hours rather than days… enough said) so if endless sunny days spent on the beach are part of your perfect life, Sydney is the one for you.
  5. You’re a foodie
The food scene in Sydney is nearly as famous as its landmarks – you can enjoy fresh seafood with a backdrop of sparkling water, whether you are at Darling Harbour, Circular Quay or a cute beachside cafe.

CHOOSE MELBOURNE IF…

  1. You love culture
Melbourne is a haven for art lovers, with world class galleries, street art in every laneway and a packed yearly calendar of events. From the National Gallery of Victoria to the ever changing graffiti of Hosier Lane, creativity is everywhere in Melbourne.
  2. You’re a foodie (Part 2)
Like Sydney, Melbourne has you covered on the food front. The city is renowned for its diverse cuisine, from high end restaurants to hole-in-the-wall dumpling spots. Whatever you do, don’t miss out on the coffee – Melbourne is obsessed with its coffee culture and is ranked with some of the best.
  3. You’re sporty
If you’re a sports fan, Melbourne is the place to be. It’s home to the Australian Open, the Melbourne Cup, and Aussie Rules Football. The city lives and breathes sports, and the atmosphere at a game is unbeatable.
  4. You love discovering hidden gems
Melbourne’s many laneways are famous for their hidden bars, underground jazz clubs, and boutique shops. It’s a city that rewards curiosity, so get lost on purpose and see what you discover.
  5. You enjoy day trips
From the world famous Great Ocean Road and its dramatic cliffs to the Yarra Valley’s wineries and the wildlife at Phillip Island, Melbourne is surrounded by some really incredible day-trip destinations.

So which should you choose?

  • Choose Sydney if:
You’re drawn to sunny beaches, iconic landmarks, and outdoor adventures. It’s the perfect city for those who want postcard-worthy photos and a relaxed, beachy vibe.
  • Choose Melbourne if:
You love food, culture, and uncovering hidden gems. If you’re all about street art, indie boutiques, and a buzzing atmosphere, Melbourne will steal your heart.
