If you’ve started packing for your trip, you will probably have your top essential items in mind already. However, we wanted to share a few essentials of our own – some standard and some a little unexpected – that you may not have added to your list just yet!
1. A good travel pillow
It’s not the most original item on the list, but it’s essential for a reason. A good travel pillow can make such a difference on long bus or plane journeys. For side sleepers, our team has found the Trtl travel pillow to be brilliant.

2. Padlocks
Most hostels provide lockers for storing valuables, but not the padlocks. We suggest taking two: a strong, chunky one for locker security, and a slimmer wire padlock for securing your backpack on flights or whenever you want a little extra peace of mind.

3. Sheet sleeping bag
Not a must-have, but can be very useful in hot or cold conditions! It’s a great option if you want an extra layer under hostel bedding, or for a bit of cover when it’s too warm. We recommend getting one that comes in a pouch and folds up really small.
4. Electrolytes
You can usually buy electrolytes in the country you’re visiting, but we like to take a few just in case. Many backpacking trips involve physical activity, hot weather (or a mix of both), making these very useful for some extra hydration. You’ll feel boosted and ready to get up the next morning and do it all again.

5. Waterproof phone holder
Useful in both good and bad weather! From hiking in the rain to kayaking in the sunshine, a waterproof phone holder is a must-have to make sure you still get to capture those memories without damaging your phone!

6. A passport cover
Many countries won’t accept a foreign driving licence as valid ID, so if you’re heading to a bar or asked to prove your age, you’ll need your passport. A cover helps keep it safe from wear and tear, especially when you’re constantly digging it out of your bag on nights out or days exploring.

7. A leg hammock
Not your everyday travel accessory, but an actual game changer for anyone who struggles to sleep on a plane with their feet on the floor. Clip it to the tray table, sit on the other end and let your legs hang in comfort throughout the flight!

8. Music Sleep Headband
Our number-one most underrated travel essential! This is a soft fabric headband with built-in Bluetooth speakers. Some even double as an eye mask, so you can listen to music, white noise, or a sleep playlist whilst blocking out light. There is a high chance that you might want a day-time nap or an early night at some point during the trip, but your roommates might have other ideas! The solution? A combination of mouldable wax earplugs and the bluetooth headband. This is super handy for flights as well as hostels – to block out the noise and replace it with music or a podcast.

These little extras can turn a good trip into a great one – it’s nice to feel super prepared for everything to come. Bring what helps you feel comfortable and get excited for the trip ahead!
Happy exploring!
